“This is a chef’s special, a deliciously funny and occasionally dramatically-daring concoction of a play.”
British Theatre Guide
“The comedy in Stefan Escreet’s slick production compliments not-so- funny cultural issues, especially the immigrant experience of prejudice and the still-powerful pull of family ties in Bangladesh.”

WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY PETER MACQUEEN
Saturday 22nd October at 8pm
Adults £12 Students £10
“ Loneliness isn't about being alone, it's about not having the choice – and that is at the heart of Peter Macqueen's one-man play about the life of Millican Dalton, the Borrowdale hermit. Based on the real life caveman of the Lake District, The Professor of Adventure takes you not only into the cave he calls his home, above Keswick at the start of World War Two, it takes you into the mind of an educated man ahead of his time".
He smelt like a mountain goat, chain-smoked Woodbines and lived in a cave. Millican Dalton was a mountain guide, philosopher and self-proclaimed inventor of shorts.
Leaving his stifling city job, Millican dropped out before it became fashionable and set out to seek romance and freedom living amongst nature in cabins, tents and caves for the next fifty years of his life.

5th March - Music Performance
Looking forward to March we have Kirsty McGee coming to peform with her new project Ocotillo. Over the years Kirsty has become a regular booking for us at Upfront Arts Venue and we can't wait to hear her new music.
Kirsty McGee (UK)
UK songwriter Kirsty McGee is best known for her song ‘Sandman’, which featured in Danny Boyle’s film Trance (2013). Through 14 years and 7 albums she has toured relentlessly, fronting the award winning Hobopop Collective. Her sound is joyful, gentle and dusty with hints of gospel, 30s jazz and old vinyl blues. Her 2014 album Those Old Demons features Tom Waits’ sideman Marc Ribot.
Robert Garson (US)
Robert Garson was born in Arkansas and raised in the San Joaquin Valley in central California where his folks danced to Merle Haggard and Buck Owens performing at the Big Fresno Barn. He now resides in the high desert of Southern California near Joshua Tree. Steeped in the traditions of country, bluegrass and rhythm and blues, he marries ancient and new lyric sensibility to the deep grooves heard in roadhouses from Bakersfield to New Orleans.
Travelling in the Mojave desert, McGee first became aware of the rough-voiced, ardent picking of Robert Garson in April 2015. Intrigued, a return trip to Joshua Tree in the fall marked the start of a musical friendship and of the duo Ocotillo, (pronounced ‘ock-a-tea-oh’) named after a Sonoran plant whose crimson rainflowers have earned it the nickname desert coral. March 2016 brings these two artists together for the first time in a performance that promises to be a musical feast.

We are very pleased to announce
SHOOGLENIFTY – THE UNTIED KNOT TOUR
25 year anniversary and album launch tour
2015 has been an epic year for Shooglenifty, a band formed 25 years ago in Edinburgh. Retaining four of their original members plus their bass player of 12 years standing, the line up has been invigorated in the past year by fiery young mandolinist Ewan MacPherson who contributes four tunes to their critically acclaimed new CD release The Untied Knot. Also new in 2015 is ‘puirt a beul’ vocalist Kaela Rowan who graces the album with the first ever collection of Shoogle songs.
Shooglenifty’s sound springs from traditional Scottish dance music, energised by the beats and bass line of something altogether more contemporary. It is not a sit-down kind of music, it’s a join-in, and get on your feet kind of vibe. Attempts to describe this almost uncatagorisable band include: ‘dub-diddly',‘hypno-folkadelic-ambient-trad’ and ‘Acid-Croft’. Whatever it is, it has endured, evolved and, above all, entertained for quarter of a century.
We have a limited number of allocated seating tickets available at £17.50 for those of you who prefer to listen and not dance.

Lyons and La Zel are a duo consisting of soulful vocalist, Léa La Zel and beatboxer/guitarist/rapper and flautist, James Lyons. Their music blends together elements of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop with uplifting, conscious lyrics and tasteful beatbox rhythms.
Beatboxing is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines using one's mouth, lips, tongue, and voice. It may also involve singing, and vocal imitation of basslines, horns, and other musical instruments.
James Lyons will be showcasing some of his solo flute and harmonica skills while beat boxing at the same time.
The other duo of the evening are local chaps, Paddy Rogan & Jack Hartley, who have been working closely together for many years. They play folk, blues and their own unique brand of acoustic music with dual guitars and vocal harmonies.

We are delighted to welcome back Richard Durrant for his 2nd concert at Upfront. His mode of transport to reach us this time is rather different .......
After a successful, 1,500 mile, seven week Cycling Music tour last year the UK’s busiest virtuoso guitarist is back in the saddle.
Ever the maverick Richard Durrant will pedal up to 100 miles between gigs carrying everything on his bike, performing a varied selection of virtuoso guitar music chosen to highlight the chameleon like qualities of this popular instrument. The show will feature Durrant’s own Cycling Music for guitar, sequencers and pre-recorded bicycle percussion, complete with spectacular projected animations.
Cycling Music was written for Richard’s very successful and popular, 2014 album, used during the BBC’s coverage of last year’s Le Tour as well as in the film Bicycle (Blue Hippo Productions), on ITV’s Cycle Show and on BBC Radio3.
The cycling minstrel will also find room in his cycle trailer for his favourite ukulele on which he’ll perform works by JS Bach. Richard, producer of “ The Secret of Life” by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, is something of a uke specialist.
This year Richard is very proud to be riding a bike built especially for the tour by Marek Aurelius based around an Aurelius Colombus Zoma road bike.

This funked up folk band's sweet melodies and raucous reels blend trad and self penned fiddle tunes with bass and percussion creating a sound that’s modern yet familiar. www.stooshiefolk.co.uk
Stooshie’s mix of guitars, fiddles, whistle, bass and percussion move you from the warm and melancholic – reflecting their love of the Cumbrian sea and the hills – to a jigging frenzy that’ll make you want to dance all night…
Stooshie is made up of Rachel Swift (fiddle), Pete Leeson (fiddle and guitar), Simon O’Hare (guitar and bass) and Dave Muir (percussion and low whistle). The group describe their music as rooted in folk but with a modern twist.
Dave, Peter and Simon all work in conservation in Cumbria, so recurring themes of nature and their love of the Cumbrian fells abound. This concert is to celebrate the newly restored footpath between Skelton and Unthank.

PRESS: "It takes a special kind of talent to take an old school musical idea and turn it into the Next Big Thing, but that's what they did. After a year packed with storming shows, including festivals like Bestival and Kendall Calling, it seemed inevitable when they were picked to headline the Brit Awards After Party, 2014. But that was merely a star studded curtain raiser to what looks like being an even more successful year".

It is 21 years since Baka Beyond’s debut CD “Spirit of the Forest” was released, helping to define the genre “World Music”. They have been constantly touring and releasing new albums since then.
Their work with the Baka Forest People, who originally inspired their sound, has meant that key players, Martin Cradick and Su Hart have taken several months off each year to work with the Baka in Cameroon, repaying the debt of their music. They set up the charity Global Music Exchange to facilitate this.
Recently Baka Beyond have had something of a renaissance. The injection of some young blood in the form of Clyde Kramer on drums (who has spent several months himself playing music with the Baka in the forests of Cameroon) and Ellie Jamison on vocals (who at the age of 18 toured with Baka Beyond and is on their album “East to West”) has invigorated their sound.
Baka Beyond’s tour last November around Britain was very well received. Once it was over they went straight to Penpont Estate in Wales to provide live music for a version of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, a first for them. 2 tracks on the new album, “Ariel’s Song” and “Full Fathom Five” are from this production. Baka Beyond’s interpretations of the Baka women’s magical singing is perfect for setting the scene in this most mystic and musical of Shakespeare’s plays.
The new album is more of a “band album” than their last release “Beyond the Forest”. The interplay between Clyde’s drumming and Ayo’s percussion particularly give the album a vibrant “live”feel.Follow the link to hear music from "After the Tempest" http://bakabeyond.bandcamp.com/album/after-the-tempest The live band features the following artists: Martin Cradick: guitar Su Hart: vocals Kibisingo Douglas (long-time bass player with Kanda Bongo Man & Baka Beyond bassist since 2005): bass guitar Ayodele Scott: percussion Clyde Kramer: drums Ellie Jamison: vocals
The Baka Forest People also still play their part in writing some of the songs and providing vocals and traditional instruments on several tracks of the CD.All royalties owed to the Baka musicians go to them via the registered charity, Global Music Exchange, www.1heart.org

Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra are one of the hardest working bands in the UK roots circuit.
...with thousands of touring miles under their belts, they have earned themselves a sizeable fan base in the UK, Europe and beyond. Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, they play their own brand of Western Swing, Blues, Gypsy Jazz and Country, or “North Eastern Swing” as they've coined it.
Their style is more eclectic than most, influenced by early 20th century American music, with the addition of “razor-sharp” solos, great arrangements and original songs; their music harks back to a golden age whilst staying perfectly modern. The songs are penned by Rob Heron, a crazy fool for country music and a full time dandy-cowboy. His songs are full of character, satire, and good old fashion hollerin’.
The band, an hot six-piece, features Ben Fitzgerald (guitar), Tom Cronin (mandolin), Colin Nicholson (accordion), Rob Blazey (double bass) and Paul Archibald (drums).
Their debut album, ‘Money Isn't Everything’, caused a sensation when it was released in 2012, winning a host of rave reviews – many of them 5-star.

OLD HERBACEOUS - a one man play by Reginald Arkell. Dramatised by Alfred Shaughnessy
The play is a PMac and Theatre by the Lake production. Performed and produced by Peter Macqueen. Pottering amongst the seeds and cuttings at the back of his ramshackle greenhouse in the garden of a Gloucestershire manor house. Herbert Pinnegar, now in his twilight years is full of memories and tales of a by-gone era. In between potting up and potting on, he recounts his journey from orphan boy to legendary head gardener “Old Herbaceous” and tells of his friendship with the lady of the house, Mrs Charteris.
Sown with the seeds of gardening wisdom, this charming one man show is a love story – a humorous portrayal of a single-minded yet gentle man with a passion for plants.

Rory McLeod is easily one of the UK’s very best live roots musicians and songwriters. A live Rory McLeod set is unforgettable experience. Rory’s solo sets combine virtuoso harmonica and spoon playing, great lyrics, rhythm generated by the use of the tap board and a percussive guitar style which at times echoes reggae and blues and other times folk and South American Music. Rory weaves yarns between the songs that often have a cultural or political significance. "ex-circus clown and fire eater. A modern travelling troubadour using tap shoes, acappella, harmonica, guitar, trombone, spoons, finger cymbals, bandorea, djembe and various percussion instruments! After their brilliant concert 18 months ago we have managed to book the band again as they pass through Cumbria on their 2015 tour. The John Langan Band are a dynamic trio, with a sound that is rooted in Celtic Folk, but encompasses Balkan, Roma, Gypsy Swing and Flamenco. The band met in Glasgow and has been playing together for 7 years. Their performances are high energy, unhinged, and musically extravagant, as they take traditional acoustic idioms and deliver them with a punk abandonment and virtuosic flare. Having played over 100 gigs in the past year alone, the band have now established themselves across the UK as being one of the best live Folk bands around.
